The Martha’s Vineyard Boys & Girls Club Healthy Happy Kids H2K food program is now helping feed 32% of ALL kindergarten thru eighth-grade children (one in three) on Martha’s Vineyard. It’s a staggering statistic. When this after school program was started two years ago at the MV Boys & Girls Club, I don’t think anyone knew what an impact this would have on so many children. The Martha’s Vineyard Teddy Bear Suite Fundraiser has backed and help launch this vital program.
People are still surprised to learn that there is a food scarcity/food insecurity problem on the idyllic Island of Martha’s Vineyard. Almost half of the Island’s children are on free or reduced breakfast/lunch programs — so many youngsters going without something so basic as food.
Boys & Girls Club Happy Healthy Kids
Martha’s Vineyard Boys & Girls Club Healthy Happy Kids provides the food to fill the gap between school and home. Some children will remain at the Club until 6:00 p.m. and go to another childcare provider after that. The question of what they will eat is a reality, but Healthy Happy Kids lets no child go without.
Healthy Happy Kids, H2k, has changed the Club in so many ways. We all know what it’s like to be “hangry.” Imagine being a child who is hungry. Imagine that feeling along with all the other things that kids have to deal with throughout the day. Being nervous, tired, overwhelmed, alone, happy, sad, even scared. Imagine how comforting it must be to go to the Club after a long day at school and have delicious, healthy fun food to eat alongside your friends.
The hundreds of children who attend the After School Program each week have access to a substantial “snack” thru the Happy Healthy Kids food program. Each day there is something new on the menu, and these kids are excited to see what awaits them. No longer do they go hungry because you have no money to buy a snack or something from a vending machine.
Children who have full bellies are happier children. There has been a noticeable change in behavior. They play better together, do better with their homework, have the energy to play sports, and are kinder to each other.
Martha’s Vineyard Teddy Bear Suite Fundraiser
With the Club now serving so many hundreds of children each week, and with an increase in enrollment each year, it is imperative that Martha’s Vineyard Boys & Girls Club Healthy Happy Kids H2K food program has the support it needs. And that is why the Martha’s Vineyard Teddy Bear Suite is so important.
Through the events and online donations, the Teddy Bear Suite is able to fund this remarkable program that addresses childhood hunger on Martha’s Vineyard. This is why we try to reach out to so many, to help make this happen. It will take $45,000 to fund Healthy Happy Kids. Last year, the Teddy Bear Suite raised $41,000, so this new goal is definitely doable.
Fundraising Goal For H2K Is $45,000
This dollar amount is small when you think about the impact it has. Healthy Happy Kids allows children to be children, to enjoy themselves, not have to worry about food or struggle with the pain of being hungry. Every child is equal, every child has the chance to nourish their bodies.
We hope you will visit the eighth Annual Martha’s Vineyard Teddy Bear Suite in its new home, 17 Winter Street, Nevin Square in downtown Edgartown, and support this worthy cause. If you can’t make it, we ask that you consider making an online donation to the Club’s Healthy Happy Kids. Help these kids be kids, and not worry about their next meal. You can donate anytime online.
